Our Challenge

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is a leading cancer care and research facility based in Manchester. They knew that their current website was not sufficiently catering to the needs of their wide variety of stakeholders.

Initially, our remit was to conduct an in-depth research project to understand exactly what each user needs from The Christie's site, and identify areas for improvement.

We then turned our recommendations into reality by handing over to our talented website design and development teams.

  • Website Design

User Experience Research

The Christie and its website must cater to diverse group of users, including patients, their families, healthcare professionals and medical researchers. These groups have a range of priorities and needs, and it is vital that The Christie's website is able to cater to all of them.

To truly understand these needs, we conducted a range of activities with members of all stakeholder groups, including interviews, questionnaires and focus groups.

This was complimented by desk-based research such as site usage and structure analysis, use of heat map technology and competitor site review.

The result was a full and comprehensive report of the preferences and needs of all users, and solid recommendations of how the site can be improved to meet them.

Website Design & Development

The new website has been restructured to make it as easy as possible for users to find the information that is most important and relevant to them. This includes clear colour-coding to help signpost the information, and a cleaner homepage design with high priority content, such as directions and donations taking centre stage.

The mega menu also makes use of hover states, so that only the pages that are most relevant to that user appear - there are no distractions to other areas of the site.

The site also includes a screen reader integration, a key accessibility feature which enables users to have the content of any page read aloud to them.
